Five Steps To Successful Career Pivots

Five Steps To Successful Career Pivots

Many individuals have made bold career pivots throughout history, achieving remarkable success, including Jeff Bezos, Vera Wang, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Martha Stewart, and J.K. Rowling. And me. 🙂

Whether it’s leaving a stable job as a teacher, transitioning from a triage nurse to telemedicine, or switching from property and casualty insurance to health insurance, successful pivots share key traits: an open mind, curiosity, strong self-belief, resilience, and adaptability.

Identifying Change
Ask yourself: do you want to change your employer, industry, or role? First, identify the opportunity. Then look in the mirror. What skills and interests can you apply elsewhere? This process is often easier with a neutral third party—sorry, Mom!

Research and Networking
Explore your new field through reading and networking. LinkedIn is a fantastic tool for this. Reflect on what you wanted to be when you grew up; those dreams can guide your next steps.

Skill Development
Identify gaps in your skills and determine how to acquire the necessary qualifications. Often, your existing skills translate beautifully into new directions.

Build a FrankenMentor
Create a supportive community of mentors, colleagues, and friends—yes, even Mom! Don’t go it alone.

Take Your Leap
Be open to mapping out your path. Some pivots are best executed in small steps rather than giant leaps.

Remember: a successful career pivot can lead to personal fulfillment and professional growth.
